The last few years have seen the #MeToo movement turn from a Twitter storm into the beginning of a seismic shift in workplace culture.
#MeToo has set new standards for what’s acceptable, particularly when it comes to the workplace – it’s implications go far beyond just sexual harassment to encompass all forms of workplace misconduct and racism and discrimination in the workplace. When we spend an average of 40 hours a week at work, culture should be a top priority for organizational leaders wishing to attract and retain top talent and to grow their business sustainably.
2019 marked the beginnings of a philosophical transformation in corporate culture from “growth at all costs” towards sustainable growth, a focus on people and business as a force for good in the world.
As we move into this new decade, we’ve collated four strategies you can use to ensure your organization supports a culture in which your employees thrive and feel proud to be part of:
- Practice inclusive leadership – inclusivity and diversity starts at the top and should be baked into an organization’s DNA at every touchpoint: from hiring practices through to leadership training.
- Make people accountable (on both sides) – workplace bullying, sexual misconduct and discrimination of all kinds thrive in low-accountability environments. Dual accountability on behalf of both the employee and employer not only sets the bar for what’s acceptable but also for normalizing reporting practices and resolution.
- Put your people first – HR strategy should start with your employees. Empower them to Speak Up safely about behaviors affecting their lives every day and give your workforce the chance to shape their environment.
- Question legacy mechanisms – from training practices to reporting tools, question legacy mechanisms when it comes to how your organization deals with sensitive issues. Are they actually delivering the desired outcome and creating a workplace culture that reflects your company’s values and mission?
At Vault Platform we empower organizations to create a culture of trust, accountability and transparency. We believe that a solid foundation on which to build culture enables each individual to Speak Up safely and feel like they can bring their whole authentic selves to work.
